A teenager died in an ATV crash in Aroostook County on Sunday night, officials say.

Two 15-year-olds were riding a side-by-side ATV in a field in Fort Fairfield at about 7:45 p.m. Sunday, Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesperson Mark Latti said in a news release Monday.

The driver turned hard to the left while accelerating, causing the vehicle to roll over, Latti said.

The passenger died at the scene, Latti said, while the driver was transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening. The two teens were not wearing helmets or seatbelts.

Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle and Caribou fire and rescue departments assisted in the response. The crash is under investigation.
