Two people died in a wrong-way car crash in Penobscot County on Monday night.

Maine State Police are investigating the circumstances of the crash, which killed Sandra Lacombe, 67, of Medway, and Luis Mendoza, 20, of Motahkomikuk (Indian Township).

Dispatchers received a report of a wrong-way driver in Island Falls just before 9:30 p.m. Monday.

Several law enforcement agencies responded and found a Toyota Camry speeding and traveling south in the northbound lanes of I-95, according to a Tuesday news release from Maine State Police.

The car eventually reached a construction zone on a bridge in Medway, where it crashed head-on into another vehicle.
