22-Year-Old Passenger Dies After Mid-Flight Medical Emergency on Southwest Flight

A young passenger from Dallas has died after suffering a medical emergency aboard a Southwest Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles, authorities confirmed.

Rain McMillan Walmsey, 22, became unresponsive during Flight 958 on August 7, prompting crew members to administer CPR before the aircraft landed at Los Angeles International Airport. Emergency responders met the plane upon arrival, but Walmsey could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Walmsey's death. Officials have listed the cause of death as "deferred," meaning the determination remains pending further investigation. No manner of death has been determined.

The specifics of the medical emergency that befell Walmsey during the flight remain unclear. Southwest Airlines confirmed to news outlets that "a medical incident involving a customer" occurred aboard the Dallas-to-Los Angeles route but declined to provide additional details, referring further inquiries to local authorities.

The incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatal medical emergencies occurring aboard commercial flights in recent months. In January, Barbara Dipoli, 53, died during an Air France flight traveling from Paris to Boston. That same month, an 8-year-old child became unresponsive aboard a SkyWest flight and required an emergency diversion to Peoria, Illinois. Another passenger, a 41-year-old American, died after suffering a severe medical episode on a Fiji Airways flight to San Francisco.

Walmsey's death remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office, with authorities working to determine what caused the young passenger's sudden collapse at 22 years old.
