Casco Bay Bicycle Club seeks spot in annual cycling guide after omission
The Casco Bay Bicycle Club is urging the Press Herald to add the organization to its annual cycling resource after the club was left out of the 2026 Cycling Guide published in Section B of the Aug. 20 edition.
Uwe Uhmeyer, a Gorham resident and club member, wrote to the newspaper expressing surprise and disappointment at the oversight. “We were both surprised and disappointed that there was no mention of the Casco Bay Bicycle Club,” he said, noting that the club appears as the top search result for “Bicycle Clubs in Portland Maine.”
The club provides social road rides for cyclists whose preferred pace falls in the 12‑to‑15‑mph range. Regular morning rides are held on Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays, covering 25 to 40 miles. A slower “saunter” ride is offered Sunday mornings, while Wednesday and Thursday evening rides span 15 to 20 miles, typically beginning around 6 p.m. during the longer summer days. All rides are no‑drop, meaning participants are never left alone on the road. “All our rides are no‑drop, meaning riders won’t be left out alone in the wild,” Uhmeyer noted.
Rides launch from multiple sites across the Casco Bay region, including Falmouth, Yarmouth, Westbrook, South Portland, Scarborough and Portland. The club also organizes occasional trips into the White Mountains for cyclists seeking a greater challenge. The group is active from mid‑April through mid‑October.
Participation does not require joining the club beforehand; riders may attend a ride after signing a liability waiver. New members are welcomed for an annual fee of $25. “Cyclists don’t need to join the club before participating in a club ride, but they will need to sign a liability waiver,” Uhmeyer explained.
The Press Herald said it will consider reader feedback for future editions of the cycling guide. More details, including ride schedules and waiver forms, are available on the club’s website, cascobaybicycleclub.org.
