A Bangor man faces charges of attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault after a weekend stabbing, police say.
Bangor police announced Thursday that Abel Perez, 37, was arrested this week in upstate New York. Perez is accused of stabbing someone late Saturday night at a home on Essex Street, police spokesperson Katy England said in a news release.
The victim was critically injured and taken to a hospital, police say.
Officers investigating the stabbing identified Perez as the suspect but found that he had left the scene. A neighbor also reported that the victim’s vehicle had been stolen.
The stolen vehicle was stopped Monday morning by police in Guilderland, New York, and Perez was taken into custody, England said.
In addition to Class A counts of attempted murder and elevated aggravated assault, Perez is charged with Class C theft and Class D domestic violence assault. Class A crimes — the highest level of crime in Maine — are punishable by up to 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.
