NHL to Stage Regular‑Season Games in Germany in 2027‑28
The National Hockey League announced that the Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers will each host two regular‑season matches in Germany during the 2027‑28 campaign. The Bruins will play in Munich, while the Oilers will take the ice in Cologne, the hometown of star forward Leon Draisaitl.
The two games for each club are part of a larger “Global Series” plan that the NHL and the NHL Players’ Association (NHLPA) have committed to for at least the next three seasons. “These events represent an important step in our commitment to grow the game in Germany,” said NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. “By bringing more NHL games to one of Europe’s most dynamic hockey markets, we hope to continue to deepen engagement amongst our fans, partners and local communities, while at the same time creating a significant opportunity to grow the game throughout the country.”
The opponents for the Bruins and Oilers have not yet been announced, but the league expects to announce them in the coming months.
The 2027‑28 Global Series will follow the Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators, who are scheduled to play two games in Düsseldorf in December. Those matchups will be the second and third regular‑season games the NHL has staged in Germany after the Buffalo Sabres and Los Angeles Kings played in Berlin in 2011.
The NHL’s return to Germany after a 16‑year hiatus signals the league’s intent to expand its European footprint. By staging regular‑season games in Munich, Cologne, and Düsseldorf, the NHL hopes to tap a growing fan base, nurture local partnerships, and create a lasting impact on the sport across the country.
