Chris Rock Criticizes Media, Praises Trump’s “Fake News” Claim

Boston, MA – In a recent interview with Variety, comedian and actor Chris Rock took a rare moment off his new film, Misty Green, to address the political climate and the role of the press. While acknowledging he is “not a fan” of President Donald Trump, Rock praised the former president for calling out the media as “fake,” saying the criticism was “a one‑right thing” that “almost clears them of all their other sins.”

“I’m not a fan. But it’s weird when somebody gets one thing right, and the one thing almost clears them of all their other sins. The news is fake. He got that right,” Rock told Variety.

Rock’s remarks follow a long history of political commentary from the comedian. In 2016 he was one of a handful of celebrities who publicly predicted Trump would win the election. Two years later, in 2018, he urged lawmakers in Washington, D.C., to let the former president remain free, warning that an arrest would only make him “more popular.” The same warning resurfaced in 2023 at a Washington event honoring Adam Sandler, when Rock quipped, “Are you guys really going to arrest Trump? Do you know this is only going to make him more popular. It’s like arresting Tupac. He’s just gonna sell more records. Are you stupid?”

Rock’s comments have drawn responses from media watchdogs. Curtis Houck, managing editor of the Media Research Center’s NewsBusters, released a statement to Fox News Digital. “In this day and age, we often find ourselves feeling like we’re approaching cats and dogs living together on certain issues, and that includes the acknowledgment that the legacy, elitist media have failed to serve the public,” Houck said. “The widespread awareness of both media bias and press ineptitude will be one of President Trump’s longest‑lasting legacies. Chris Rock certainly seems to be on the president’s wavelength.”

The former CNN anchor Don Lemon has also voiced support for Trump’s criticism of the media, describing the press as “playing liberal networks like puppets.” Though the comments were made in a separate context, they echo the narrative that media bias is a longstanding issue.

Variety noted that Rock’s “opinionated, incendiary persona” first caught the eye of Eddie Murphy at a New York comedy club when the comedian was 19. Today, that persona has led him to confront both Hollywood and politics in equal measure.

The new film, Misty Green, is slated for release later this year. While the project’s plot remains largely under wraps, it is expected to feature Rock’s trademark blend of sharp humor and social commentary.

As the political and media landscapes continue to evolve, Rock’s recent interview underscores the ongoing debate over the credibility of the news and the impact of high‑profile political figures on public perception.
