CNN Defends White House Correspondent After Heated Exchange with President Trump
The White House and CNN clashed Monday over a confrontation between President Donald Trump and CNN White House correspondent Kristen Holmes during an Oval Office event.
The dispute began when Holmes asked Trump about inflammatory comments made by Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who suggested the president would rather build a ballroom and travel with White House aide Natalie Harp than fulfill his presidential duties. The question reignited online speculation about the nature of Trump's relationship with Harp.
The White House's official Rapid Response account on social media platform X responded with harsh criticism, calling Holmes "a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession." The post specifically took issue with Holmes raising Ossoff's comments during an event honoring a heroic teenager.
"Someday, your children will come across your disgusting and inhumane question. They will be sickened and embarrassed to have a parent be so callous and vindictive," the White House account added in a separate message directed at the correspondent.
The event in question featured Ryder Williams, a 16-year-old lifeguard who went viral last month for rescuing 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai from the ocean. Both boys were invited to the White House to meet with the president.
Trump himself weighed in during a separate exchange with Holmes as she attempted to ask another question. The president repeatedly told her to be quiet, then turned to the young boy seated beside him.
"You're very disrespectful in front of this young man," Trump said. "Don't you find her disrespectful?"
When Holmes identified herself as being with CNN, Trump responded sharply.
"Fake News. You're fake news," the president said. "You're a loud, boisterous person. You're fake news. Be quiet. You're a fake reporter and you report fake news."
CNN quickly issued a statement defending its correspondent.
"Kristen Holmes is one of the most respected and accomplished journalists covering the White House," the network wrote. "This afternoon, she did her job and asked the President of the United States a tough, relevant, and newsworthy question on behalf of the American people."
The network condemned personal attacks on journalists, stating that while public officials are free to challenge reporting they disagree with, such attacks are "beneath the office and inconsistent with the principles of a free press."
"We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms," CNN concluded.
The White House declined to provide additional comment beyond its social media posts.
