The Colorado Avalanche have secured the future of their blue line, signing two-time Norris Trophy winner Cale Makar to an eight-year contract extension worth $163.2 million, the team announced this week.

The deal carries an average annual value of $20.4 million, establishing a new NHL record for player salaries. Makar's extension surpasses the previous benchmark set just months ago during a summer that has seen record contracts fall like dominoes across the league.

The new contract will take effect following the conclusion of the current season.

Makar, 26, has been a cornerstone of the Avalanche franchise since breaking into the league. Over 470 career games, the mobile defenseman has accumulated 507 points, including 136 goals and 371 assists. He captured the Norris Trophy as the league's top defenseman in back-to-back seasons and played a pivotal role in Colorado's 2022 Stanley Cup championship.

In addition to his even-strength production, Makar serves as the triggerman on the Avalanche's top power-play unit, commanding the point and facilitating opportunities for the team's offensive weapons.
