University of Washington Cancels Planned Appearance by Progressive Commentator Hasan Piker

Seattle — The University of Washington has pulled the plug on a January 2027 lecture by progressive Twitch commentator Hasan Piker, saying the event’s planning process fell short of the university’s standards.

Piker, a socialist streamer known for commentary on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube, had been slated to speak as part of the university’s 2026‑27 Speaker Series. The announcement of his talk had generated attention because of his reputation for making controversial remarks, including a past comment that “America deserved 9/11,” which he later called inappropriate. He also faced backlash for suggesting that Democrats who oppose Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El‑Sayed should be punished for not adhering to the party line.

In a statement issued after an internal review, university officials said, “It was determined that the process for organizing this event did not meet the necessary level of rigor for University‑hosted events in the Speaker Series.” The statement added, “Going forward, procedures will be updated to ensure the standards we have for University‑hosted events like the Speaker Series are met, particularly so that we can help elevate the level of dialogue on divisive topics during a polarized time in our country.”

The decision has drawn criticism from civil‑liberties advocates. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) released a post on X urging transparency. “If the decision was based on process — and not public backlash or criticism — @UW should be transparent about what standards were not met and how they were applied,” FIRE wrote. The group also warned, “Public universities can set standards for events. But they can’t use those standards as cover for canceling a speaker because of their views.”

Former Democratic strategist James Carville, who has spoken out against Piker’s rhetoric, weighed in on the cancellation. “I am not going to be in the same party with Hasan Piker,” Carville said on “The Sunday Briefing.” “If he becomes a force in a Democratic Party, I’m out of here. I have no intention of ever being in the same political party with that guy.”

Carville’s comments were part of a broader discussion about the direction of the Democratic Party as Piker’s viewpoints gain traction. He suggested that the party’s internal conflicts would likely be settled at the presidential level, noting that both a “governing wing” and a “DSA ring” of the party would be represented in future elections.

The university’s decision to cancel the event has reignited debate over free speech on campus. While the university says the cancellation was procedural, critics worry that process standards could be used as a pretext to silence speakers whose ideas are unpopular.

Both the University of Washington and Piker’s team were contacted for comment, but no further statement was available at press time.

The Speaker Series, which aims to bring diverse voices to the campus, continues with other events scheduled for the 2026‑27 academic year.
