Dem candidate erupts in profane defense of Hasan Piker as party figures distance themselves
Pennsylvania state Representative Chris Rabb, a democratic socialist representing Northwest Philadelphia, has ignited a firestorm within the Democratic Party after publicly defending far-left streamer Hasan Piker against widespread condemnation from party leaders.
Rabb, who secured victory in a four-way Democratic primary for Pennsylvania's 3rd Congressional District, took to social media Friday with a profanity-laced critique of fellow Democrats who have distanced themselves from Piker. His posts came a day after prominent party figures issued sharp rebukes of the Twitch streamer's inflammatory comments.
"Not White Christian nationalists? Not the broligarchs? Not the AI overlords? Nope, the guy encouraging young people to use their collective political power for good," Rabb wrote. "F— that noise."
The controversy stems from a series of controversial statements made by Piker, including remarks that suggested the United States deserved the September 11, 2001, terror attacks and comments about Jewish Americans that critics have characterized as antisemitic.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, a New York Democrat, has been among the most vocal critics. When pressed by CNN's Wolf Blitzer, who is Jewish, Jeffries stated he had addressed Piker's comments regarding the Jewish community "as forcefully as I can."
New Jersey Representative Josh Gottheimer went further Tuesday, calling for a vote on a bipartisan resolution condemning both Piker and conservative podcaster Candace Owens. Gottheimer specifically took issue with Piker's suggestion that Jewish Americans bear responsibility for violence directed at them.
"Telling millions of followers that Jewish Americans are bringing violence on themselves is blatantly antisemitic and one of the oldest tropes in the book," Gottheimer said in a statement. He also declared that any candidate campaigning with Piker would be considered "complicit."
Illinois Representative Brad Schneider echoed those concerns, accusing Piker of "victim-blaming" Jewish Americans and reiterating his earlier characterization of the streamer as an "unapologetic antisemite." Schneider warned that Democrats risk losing credibility by condemning controversial figures on the right while simultaneously "platforming those who espouse hate of any kind" within their own ranks.
Rabb's defense of Piker places him squarely at odds with the party establishment. During the primary campaign, he appeared alongside Piker at an event in West Philadelphia in April. At that time, Rabb acknowledged he would face criticism but framed such pushback as a "double standard."
"As a Black progressive, I can't do this: I'm part of the problem or whatever," Rabb told Piker, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The political maneuvering extends beyond Pennsylvania. Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, another socialist-aligned candidate, faced scrutiny for his association with Piker. After initially declining to condemn the streamer directly, El-Sayed issued a statement asserting that "nobody speaks for this campaign besides me and my campaign spokespeople."
Rabb's primary victory was notable for defeating state Senator Sharif Street, a Democrat from North Philadelphia whose father served as mayor and who had received endorsements from mainstream party figures.
Looking ahead to November, Rabb faces only independent candidate Dennis Mahoney in the heavily Democratic 3rd Congressional District, which encompasses much of Philadelphia. He is considered the strong favorite to succeed retiring Representative Dwight Evans.
