A motorcycle with two riders crashed into a tree in Falmouth on Thursday night, injuring both passengers.

At 9:59 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 6, the Falmouth Police Department responded to a motorcycle crash at the intersection of Leighton and Brook roads, according to a news release from Chief of Police John Kilbride.

According to police, the preliminary investigation found that the motorcycle operator lost control on a curve and left the roadway, striking a tree. Both the motorcycle driver, a 43-year-old man from Cumberland, and his 35-year-old female passenger, also from Cumberland, were thrown from the motorcycle.

The male driver sustained critical injures and was transported to Maine Medical Center by Falmouth Fire/EMS. The female passenger was transported with injuries that aren’t believed to be life-threatening, Kilbride said.

The driver was not wearing a helmet, said Kilbride in an email. The passenger was wearing one.

The police believe alcohol, marijuana use and speed may have been factors in the crash, according to the release. The Gorham Police Department Reconstruction Unit is assisting in the investigation of the crash.

Falmouth police urge anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact detective Mike Reali at 207-781-2300.
