Fences along Maine highways could prevent animal collisions | Letter

On a recent trip to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, I noticed the major highways had two sets of high fences along the major highway. One was immediately adjacent to the road, another about 40 or 50 feet away. These fences seemed at least 10 feet high.

The function of these fences did not occur to me until my return home to Maine and I came upon a dead deer along Interstate 95. Then I remembered not seeing any dead animals traveling along the Canadian highways with those fences. What a good idea.

Why doesn’t Congress pass legislation to install these fences along major highways in the United States? It would not prevent all animal deaths but would surely prevent many from occurring.
