Fort Myers Man Charged with Mother's Murder, Arson After Domestic Incident Turns Deadly

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A 23-year-old Fort Myers man has been charged with murder and arson in connection with his mother's death, which authorities say involved a shooting and subsequent fire at their shared home.

George Beemer was arrested Saturday by the Lee County Sheriff's Office and charged with second-degree murder, first-degree arson, and abuse of a dead human body.

The sequence of events that led to Beemer's arrest began when he called 911 from his Fort Myers residence Saturday, reporting chest pain. Emergency medical crews transported him to a hospital for evaluation.

While en route, a second emergency call came in from the same address: reports of a structure fire. Fire crews arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. Upon entering and extinguishing the blaze, investigators discovered the body of Beemer's mother inside. She had suffered severe burns and was deceased.

Detectives quickly developed probable cause to believe Beemer had shot the woman before intentionally setting the fire. Following his medical evaluation, he was taken into custody.

During interviews with investigators, Beemer confessed to the killing, according to a police report. He told detectives he had harbored years of built-up anger toward his mother and finally reached a breaking point. He admitted to shooting her once and later dousing her body with gasoline before igniting it—a decision he attributed to the fact that his mother had expressed a desire to be cremated.

Beemer also claimed his mother had mistreated him for years, including instances of molestation.

However, a friend of the victim disputed those allegations.

"There's absolutely no way," the friend told WINK News. "No, no, absolutely never, never, no. I can't buy it. I will never buy it. He's using it as a defense mechanism to think that there's any remote chance that this was justified."

Madison Edwards, a former classmate of Beemer's, said she was stunned by the news of his arrest.

"We were just completely shocked," Edwards told the outlet. "I wasn't surprised that he ended up in jail. I was just very surprised as to the reason why."

Sheriff Carmine Marceno praised the work of investigators in quickly building the case.

"Major Crimes detectives, Crime Scene investigators, and our partners with the fire service immediately recognized that something wasn't right," Marceno said in a statement. "Their professionalism, attention to detail, and relentless investigative work ensured a swift arrest was made."

Beemer is being held at the Lee County Jail without bond. The incident remains under active investigation.

"My prayers remain with the victim and loved ones as they begin to process this unimaginable tragedy," Marceno added. "They deserve answers, and we will continue working tirelessly to provide them."
