After that, it was a matter of whether the Raiders could survive. Thanks to a pitcher who improved as the game went on, they did and ended a state title drought of more than four decades. Fryeburg defeated Cony 4-3 in the Class B state championship game Saturday at St. Joseph’s College. The win gave the Raiders their first state title since going back-to-back in 1982 and 1983. “I’m speechless right now,” said Fryeburg senior Brady Chappell. “Since the beginning of the season, this was the goal, and just to be able to get here, execute and get the job done, it feels amazing — like the job is done.” Chappell hit a two-run home run in the first inning that gave Fryeburg (17-3) a 3-2 lead. David Rosales had a double, a single and two RBI for the Raiders, and pitcher Oliver Dean overcame a rocky first inning. He was nearly flawless the rest of the way in a complete-game effort.  “We got punched in the face in the first inning, but we responded and hit the ball really well and answered,” said Fryeburg coach Greg Allain. “Oliver Dean was a little shaky at the beginning, but he settled in and cruised for us the rest of the way. … I’m really proud of all of these guys.” Advertisement Landen Perry took the loss for Cony (17-3), allowing three earned runs in two innings before Ben Allen came on in relief and held Fryeburg scoreless the rest of the way. Anderson Noyes smacked a double for the Rams. Cony loaded the bases with no outs to start the game. Two batters later, Max Tibbetts hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Noyes, and then the Rams executed a double steal as Parker Morin scored from third. With two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the first, though, Fryeburg mounted a rally. Noah Day singled to left and scored on a double to the wall by Rosales. Then, Chappell crushed a home run over the left-field fence to give Fryeburg a 3-2 lead. “I’ve been hitting well lately — really seeing the ball — and I got the pitch I wanted and hit it low,” Chappell said. “That’s exactly what I was supposed to do, and I did it.” After Fryeburg made it 4-2 in the bottom of the second, Cony loaded the bases with no outs in the third. Wyatt McKenney got a run back for the Rams with a sacrifice fly, but the Raiders turned a double play to limit the damage. Fryeburg didn’t give up another run. Lance Theriault got Cony’s last hit of the game in the top of the fourth. Dean set the Rams down in order in the fifth and sixth and overcame an error in the seventh, getting Noyes to hit a popup for the final out. Advertisement “I think I just really had to settle in there and trust my team,” Dean said. “(Us scoring three runs in the first) was a huge wave of relief. Being down 0-2 in the first was not the best feeling, and seeing my team come back was a really big deal.” Cony’s loss snapped a 12-game winning streak dating back to May 14. The Rams came close to ending a long title drought of their own (1991), but while Allen’s strong effort in relief gave them a chance, Fryeburg always seemed to make the plays it needed. “I couldn’t be more proud of the 17 men who came to battle for us every day and did it until the last pitch,” Cony coach Don Plourde said. “Tip your cap to (Fryeburg). They’re a great team, and Dean just got better and better as the game went on. That’s baseball, and unfortunately, only one team goes home happy.” A handful of Fryeburg players were on the football team that lost to Cony in the Class B North final in November. I’m really happy for them; they put the work in, and we came back this year and finished it.
