A Lisbon business is under investigation over a case linked to a potentially illegally operated gambling machine in Gardiner.

The Gardiner Police Department, in conjunction with Maine’s Gambling Control Unit and the Lisbon Police Department, was executing a search warrant Monday at the Lisbon business. The Sun Journal is not identifying the business because no criminal charges or allegations have been brought by authorities.

At the business on Monday, police vehicles and a U-Haul truck could be seen in the parking lot.

The Gardiner Police Department previously told the Kennebec Journal the agency was informed of a potentially illegally operated gambling machine this past January. The information came from an official with the Maine Gambling Control Unit, according to Gardiner police Sgt. Kaleb Marston.

Marston said the Gardiner business was suspected of operating a gambling machine that accepts cash and dispenses collectable cards that can have a monetary value. While it’s legal for nonprofits to operate such machines with licenses, it’s illegal for a business that’s for-profit, he said.

The machine was seized as part of the investigation, Marston said at the time. No charges have been filed.

An email sent Monday to the Maine Gambling Control Unit seeking additional details was not immediately returned.
