George and Amal Clooney evacuate France home as wildfires spread across Europe
BRIGNOLES, France — Actor George Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, have evacuated their home in southeastern France as wildfires continue to threaten communities across southern Europe.
The couple left their residence in Brignoles, a town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, along with their 9-year-old twins as fires approached the area. Before departing, they sent a letter to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond expressing concern for the community and their commitment to its recovery.
"At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," the Clooneys wrote. "As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise two things: first, we hope you and the people of our city are safe, and second, that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
The evacuation order in Brignoles affected approximately 3,000 residents as flames closed in on the area.
The Clooneys' departure is occurring against the backdrop of an extraordinary wildfire season that has forced more than 300,000 people from their homes across France and Spain. In France's Gironde region, where temperatures climbed to nearly 104 degrees Wednesday, a massive wildfire prompted the evacuation of roughly 220,000 residents and vacationers at its peak. While many have since been able to return, tens of thousands remain displaced.
A separate blaze burning across southwestern France has grown to roughly four times the size of Paris and remained uncontained as of Wednesday.
The crisis has proved deadliest in Greece, where three firefighters have died while battling extreme conditions fueled by record heat, drought, and strong winds.
The Clooneys have maintained a farm in France for several years, a choice the actor discussed in an October 2025 interview with Esquire. He described wanting to raise his children away from Hollywood's spotlight.
"A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it," Clooney said. "But now, for them, it's like—they're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."
The actor added that he was concerned about his children growing up in Los Angeles.
"I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he said. "France — they kind of don't give a s--- about fame. I don't want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don't want them being compared to somebody else's famous kids."
Representatives for Clooney did not respond to requests for comment regarding the current status of the family or their property.
