The text provided a link to an artificial intelligence-powered website, called Gorham Guardian, that synthesizes local public records about the school budget, including sections for “red flags” and “concerns identified in the budget.” The website, which popped up this spring, has detailed information about finances in the town, all drawn from public budget documents. Its homepage includes a line graph contrasting the budget, tax rate, enrollment numbers and Gorham High School math scores over the past six years, under a headline reading “Spending Up 47%. Students Down. Scores Down.” The district’s superintendent encouraged voters to carefully evaluate any information they find online, especially those that use AI to compile and present data. “As we teach our students, responsible consumers of information should consider the accuracy of the data presented, the context surrounding it, and any potential bias that may influence its conclusions,” Heather Perry said. Gorham has had some contentious budget years, including in 2023 when [voters rejected two versions of the school budget before approving a third](https://www.pressherald.com/2023/08/15/gorham-voters-overwhelmingly-approve-education-budget/). The following year, the budget passed by only four votes. Advertisement Last June, a group called the Gorham Watchdogs, run by resident Ben Tuttle, unsuccessfully campaigned against the budget with the message “raise test scores, not taxes.” It still [passed](https://www.pressherald.com/2025/06/10/gorham-voters-pass-school-budget/), by a 204-vote margin. [Lewiston has already rejected its budget](https://www.sunjournal.com/2026/05/12/lewiston-polls-see-brisk-turnout-as-residents-vote-on-130-million-school-budget-2/). It’s not clear who runs the Gorham Guardian page. The site describes itself as an “AI-powered analysis of Gorham’s publicly available school budget records” and a civic transparency project that is independent and not affiliated with the Gorham School Department, the town, “or any political campaign or party.” But nowhere does it say who developed the site. A contact page just has a form (a request for an interview submitted through it Monday went unreturned) and an “about” page describes the site as “independent analysis of public records — built for Gorham voters.” The website domain was registered anonymously on April 16. The site appears to be powered by Groq, an American AI company unrelated to Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok. In a local Facebook page, one profile shared the link to the site multiple times with no additional message. That individual did not respond to questions about their affiliation with the page. The right-wing account Maine X Community [promoted the site in early May](https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1PBPgAWzcB/) and described it as a page created by residents that is “eye opening” about district finances. Vote No School Budget.” It’s unclear if the signs were placed by the same group. Advertisement The larger sign is sponsored by the Gorham Committee for Better Schools, a group with a South Windham P.O. Box listed as its address that has campaigned against the budget before, and endorsed a slate of mostly Republican local candidates in 2024. The committee has several signs around town, including an additional one reading: “60.5 Million Too High, Vote No!” That group is not registered with the state’s government ethics committee, nor the Gorham town clerk, although ballot question committees are [not required to register in Maine](https://www.maine.gov/ethics/committees/ballot-question) unless they receive or spend more than $5,000. Perry, the district’s superintendent, said Monday that she was aware of the website and the texts, but did not know who was behind them. In response to a question about the accuracy of the information on the site, she said it would be challenging to characterize it one way or another without a comprehensive review, but said the more important question is how the information has been selected, framed and presented. She said school budgeting requires looking beyond revenue and expenditures at variables like enrollment trends, student needs and community priorities. “Throughout the budget process, the Gorham School Department has worked hard to provide residents with transparent, comprehensive and publicly available information,” Perry added, pointing to [the district’s own budget document page](https://www.gorhamschools.org/o/gsd/page/school-budget-documentation).
