Hayden Panettiere, the 36‑year‑old actress best known for her roles on “Nashville” and the film “Remember the Titans,” died on Aug. 16 after being found unresponsive at an apartment complex in Greenville, S.C. Authorities have yet to determine a cause of death, and the case remains under active investigation.
Panettiere’s representative issued a statement Monday, calling the wave of online chatter that followed the news “deeply disrespectful” to her memory and to those who are grieving. “Many people who were not close to Hayden are using her death as an opportunity to fuel gossip and speculation about a situation they knew very little about,” the statement read. According to a police report obtained by news outlets, Panettiere was accompanied to the Greenville residence by her on‑again, off‑again boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach. The trio had traveled together from Los Angeles on Aug. 15. The following evening, after Panettiere was discovered unresponsive, Brian and Zach Hickerson called 911. Paramedics attempted life‑saving measures, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The report describes Zach Hickerson as “very emotional” while emergency responders worked to revive Panettiere. Brian Hickerson, according to the document, did not display the same level of emotion until after she was declared deceased. Officers executed a search warrant at the residence and collected a bag of medication that Panettiere had been taking. The medication was turned over to investigators.
A preliminary autopsy performed by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office found no signs of trauma that contributed to Panettiere’s death. The cause has not been officially determined, and the death certificate lists the manner as “under investigation.” The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has since joined the inquiry, adding federal resources to the local and state effort.
Panettiere’s relationship with Brian Hickerson has had a turbulent history. The two dated on and off for several years; in 2020, Hickerson faced domestic‑violence charges related to incidents involving Panettiere, and he was later convicted on a misdemeanor count.
