'Jumanji' actor James Handy's girlfriend's son charged with murder after actor found stabbed to death

James Handy, an 81-year-old actor recognized for his roles in films like Jumanji and Top Gun: Maverick, was found dead outside his Tarzana home after being stabbed early Wednesday morning, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office. The person charged in connection with his death is Michael Gledhill, 44, Handy’s girlfriend’s son.

Handy was discovered unconscious in the front yard of his residence by emergency responders called to the scene after a 911 caller made a startling statement: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.” Paramedics transported Handy to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators revealed Gledhill, who lived at the property with his mother—Handy’s girlfriend—flagged down officers upon their arrival and confessed to the crime.

Gledhill has been charged with one count of murder, including a special allegation that he personally used a deadly weapon, a knife. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of 26 years to life in prison. He was arrested and booked into Van Nuys Jail, with his bail set at $2 million.

In a statement, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman emphasized the gravity of the incident, stating, “This is not how anyone’s life should end, stabbed in the chest and left dying in the front yard of a home. The victim, James Handy, deserved to live out his later years enjoying what he had worked so hard for and enjoying it with those he loved and cared about.” Hochman added that Handy’s life “mattered” and that the perpetrator “must be held accountable for his actions.”

Authorities have not yet released details regarding the motive behind the attack. The community and fans of Handy’s work have expressed grief over the loss, with many highlighting his contributions to film and television over decades. Gledhill awaits further court proceedings as the case proceeds.
