Kennebunk Town Hall closed for day after bomb threat, police say

KENNEBUNK — Town Hall was shut down Wednesday after authorities received bomb threats targeting local government offices, officials confirmed.

Employees arriving for work discovered threatening emails shortly after 8 a.m., triggering an evacuation of the municipal complex that houses both Town Hall and the Kennebunk Fire-Rescue Department, according to Deputy Police Chief Eric O'Brien. Emergency responders were notified immediately, he said.

Maine State Police and Maine Capitol Police deployed bomb-detecting K-9 units to the scene. After an extensive sweep of the building, authorities found no explosives, O'Brien said.

Investigators believe the emails originated from outside Maine, prompting local police to contact the FBI's Boston office, which handles federal matters in the state. As of Wednesday afternoon, the FBI had not provided comment on the investigation.

Maine State Police clarified that their agency's involvement was limited to providing the K-9 units and that they are not participating in the broader investigation.
