Maine high‑school football roundup: Friday’s games bring a mix of blowouts and close contests

A week of Friday night football delivered a broad range of results across the state, with many schools riding high on decisive victories and a few pushing for tight finishes. The most decisive win came from Skowhegan, whose team rolled past Messalonskee 40–8, while other contests ranged from easy routs to competitive battles.

In the northernmost part of the state, Skowhegan’s defense held Messalonskee to just eight points, a game highlighted by a photo of Skowhegan’s Blake Kenyon breaking away from Messalonskee’s Larsen Ronco. Skowhegan’s 40 points came from a balanced attack that combined rushing and passing, underscoring the team’s strong offensive coordination.

Other high‑scoring games included Spruce Mountain’s 60–0 victory over Traip Academy, and Thornton Academy’s 61–0 shutout of Sanford. Stearns also finished with a dominant 42–0 win over Ellsworth. In the lower‑midstate, Massabesic topped Lewiston 41–0, while MCI beat Belfast 17–0. Old Town’s 48–0 triumph over Waterville and the 60–0 rout by Spruce Mountain were among the most lopsided scores of the day.

The day also saw several solid wins by a margin of at least a touchdown. Bangor defeated Edward Little 35–14, and Biddeford overcame Marshwood 37–14. John Bapst’s 44–26 win over Mattanawcook Academy was a notable display of offensive prowess, while Kennebunk edged Westbrook 20–14. Lisbon’s 47–14 victory over Oak Hill and Madison’s 34–28 win against Poland highlighted the competitive nature of the conference.

Cape Elizabeth took advantage of a 18–8 win against Lake Region, and Greely dominated Hermon with a 28–14 scoreline. In the eastern region, Freeport won 42–14 against Dirigo, while the historic matchup between Yarmouth and Orono produced an 78–14 victory for Yarmouth. Washington Academy finished the day with a 20–14 win over Bucksport.

The Thursday night slate set the stage for Friday’s games. Bonny Eagle maintained its unbeaten streak with a 35–14 win over Exeter, New Hampshire. Foxcroft Academy displayed its offensive depth by defeating Hampden Academy 66–0. The girls’ soccer match between Leavitt and Nokomis ended in a 36–12 draw, and Oceanside secured a 14–0 shutout of Brewer. Winthrop capped the Thursday series with a 29–7 triumph over Mountain Valley.

Looking ahead, the Saturday schedule offers a full day of action for high‑school football fans. The day’s first matchup pits Scarborough against Gorham at 11 a.m., followed by a noon game between Portland and Oxford Hills. Boothbay takes on Telstar at 1 p.m., while Gardiner hosts Medomak Valley at the same time. Houlton meets Mt. Desert Island, and Lawrence squares up against Camden Hills, both also scheduled for 1 p.m. In the afternoon, Maranacook faces Old Orchard Beach, Morse plays Winslow, and Sacopee Valley hosts Mt. View, each beginning at 1 p.m. The evening’s program starts with Falmouth taking on Windham at 4 p.m., followed by Wells’ 6 p.m. showdown with York.

These games offer teams an opportunity to build momentum as the season progresses and give fans a chance to witness emerging talent across the state. The high‑school football community remains vibrant, with each matchup delivering its own narrative—whether that’s a dominant display, a close contest, or an upset that shakes up the standings.

All games are proudly supported by the Maine State Credit Union.
