All of those things are true for the Maranacook/Winthrop co-ops. On Friday, in the Class C quarterfinals against their Lincoln Academy counterparts, the boys defeated the shorthanded Eagles 21-0, while the reining state champion girls squad won 22-2. The third-seeded Maranacook/Winthrop boys (9-6) will play No. 2 Gardiner (10-5) in the state semifinals Wednesday. “I didn’t know (the Eagles) were going to be down guys,” said Hawks coach Daniel Brannigan. “It sucks, I feel bad, especially some big guys that they have. But, play who they tell you to play, and the guys didn’t let up. And I just told them, I said, ‘Hey, just put it away and we’ll focus on the next round, but let’s get this one out of the way first.’” It took the Hawks less than three minutes to jump out to a 4-0 lead over the sixth-seeded Eagles (8-7). Seniors Ethan Chilton and Caleb Morgan scored five of their combined 10 goals in the first quarter. Advertisement “I think we just work great as a team, and when we click, we click,” Morgan said. “And that’s just what happened today.” Junior Jacob Lyons joined Chilton and Morgan in the scoring column with a hat trick of his own, as well as four assists. Tristan Riley, also a junior, won 14 faceoffs, scored two goals and picked up an assist.  “We moved the ball well,” Chilton said. “It wasn’t going to be easy coming in here. We don’t have as many guys as last year. But we got it done, we moved the ball well and put the ball in the back of the net.” BLACK BEARS STAY UNBEATEN The top-seeded Maranacook/Winthrop (15-0) girls similarly took control of their game against No. 8 Lincoln (4-11) within the first couple minutes. By the end of the first quarter, the Black Bears were ahead 9-0, again overwhelming the team they beat 18-1 in the season opener in April. “Our girls, we play one speed, and it’s 10 all the time,” girls coach Zach Stewart said.  Even when the Black Bears found themselves up 19-1 in the third quarter, the players on the sideline were heard loudly cheering for the players on the field during a lockdown defensive possession.  Advertisement “I think it comes down to how we treat each other, how we respect each other, and not one person on our team lacks that,” junior Stella Stewart said. “And so I think that’s what makes us successful.” Stewart and seniors Alice Ferran and Mya St. Pierre were the main catalysts of Maranacook/Winthrop’s offense. Ferran scored six goals, St. Pierre had five goals and two assists, and Stewart netted two goals and six assists. “This being my last game on this field ever, just feels so nice to have ended off on such a great win going into the tournament,” Ferran said. “And, yeah, it’s just amazing. Such a high.”  Ysabelle Bhe scored both Linconl Academy goals. In Wednesday’s semifinal, the Black Bears will face the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between No. 4 Traip Academy (10-5) and No. 5 Erskine Academy (9-5).
