Multiple people stabbed near Penn Station, leaving one seriously injured as investigation continues
A man was taken into custody Sunday evening after a string of stabbings near Penn Station left six people injured, authorities said. The attack took place at the intersection of West 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue, a bustling junction that draws heavy foot traffic as commuters and tourists move through one of the city’s busiest transit hubs.
Emergency crews from the Fire Department of New York City arrived at the scene at 7:02 p.m., according to FDNY officials. Six civilians were hurt: one suffered serious injuries, two were listed in moderate condition, and three had minor wounds. Five of the victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, including the person with the most severe injuries and the two with moderate injuries. A sixth patient with minor injuries was transported to NewYork‑Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Amtrak Police, who are leading the investigation, said the suspect was apprehended at the scene. “Earlier this afternoon, Amtrak Police responded to a reported stabbing at New York Penn Station. The suspect has been apprehended and an investigation is underway,” the agency said in a statement. The New York Police Department said it had referred inquiries to Amtrak Police, which is handling the case.
The circumstances that led to the attack remain unclear. Investigators have not released details about a possible motive or the identity of the suspect, and the case is still in its early stages.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had been briefed on the incident. “My heart is with everyone who was injured, their loved ones, and all those shaken by this unacceptable violence,” he wrote on the social media platform X. “I’m wishing each of the victims a full and speedy recovery.” The mayor also praised the quick response of first responders. “I’m grateful to the Amtrak Police Department and the first responders who acted quickly to apprehend the suspect and provide emergency care,” he added.
The assault occurred during a period of heightened activity for the city’s transportation network. Penn Station was crowded with fans heading to see the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals and visitors arriving ahead of FIFA World Cup events scheduled in the region. Despite the violence, city officials said there were no disruptions to Amtrak service.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to piece together the sequence of events. The public has been urged to contact Amtrak Police with any information that could aid the inquiry.
