National Guard member shot in DC, police chief says

National Guard member and suspect shot during altercation in Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. — A National Guard member was shot during an altercation that took place in the capital on Sunday night, and the individual suspected of carrying the gun was also wounded, police officials said Monday morning. Both are expected to survive after receiving medical treatment.
Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll told reporters that the shooting occurred after National Guard personnel tried to intervene in a fight that had broken out in an unnamed area of the city. “The suspect was also shot,” Carroll said. “National Guard members attempted to intervene in a fight.” The chief added that the situation was still under investigation and that no arrests had been made at the time of his statement.
The incident, reported as happening on Sunday evening, has prompted an inquiry by the Metropolitan Police Department into the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Law‑enforcement officials confirmed that the Guard member, who was on duty at the time, sustained injuries but is alive and undergoing treatment. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, was also taken to a medical facility and is expected to recover.
No details have yet been released about what sparked the confrontation or why the National Guard was involved. The department said that members of the guard were called to the scene by officers responding to reports of a physical altercation. When the situation escalated, one of the Guard members was struck by gunfire and the suspect was similarly shot.
Chief Carroll emphasized the seriousness of the incident but also expressed confidence in the safety protocols in place for National Guard personnel who are often called to assist with crowd and conflict control in urban settings. “We’re looking into exactly how this happened and why the shooting took place,” he said.
The Metropolitan Police Department has not yet issued a statement regarding the weapons used or the number of shots fired. It also has not identified the suspect or the Guard member involved, citing ongoing investigations and concerns about privacy and potential legal implications.
The shooting is one of several incidents involving law‑enforcement and armed individuals that have drawn attention to the challenges of maintaining public safety in high‑traffic urban areas. Police officials urged residents to remain calm while investigations proceed.
The Department of National Guard, which is responsible for training and readiness of state troops, has not yet commented on the incident. The Department of Homeland Security has also not issued a statement.
Police are continuing to collect evidence and interview witnesses as they work to determine the full details of the altercation. No further updates are available at this time.
