Cheverus started the season as the favorite in Class A and was ranked No. 1 in the [first Varsity Maine softball poll](https://www.sunjournal.com/2026/04/28/class-a-favorite-tops-first-varsity-maine-softball-poll-of-2026/) of the season. The Stags followed through and finished off an undefeated (20-0) with a 3-2 win over Hampden Academy in the Class A championship, and they are still atop the Varsity Maine poll, as they were ranked every week this spring — and they were the unanimous No. 1 in all but two polls.
[Class B champion Medomak Valley](https://www.centralmaine.com/2026/06/20/medomak-valley-softball-rolls-to-class-b-title-repeat/) finishes as the state’s No. 2 team, while [Class C champ Dirigo](https://www.sunjournal.com/2026/06/20/dirigo-softball-defeats-bucksport-for-class-c-title/) is ranked ninth. The Panthers were third [last week](https://www.sunjournal.com/2026/06/09/one-game-alters-varsity-maine-softball-poll/), and this is the Cougars’ first time in the rankings.

Hampden hadn’t been in the top 10 this season, but an impressive run to the [Class A North title](https://www.sunjournal.com/2026/06/16/hampden-softball-defeats-lewiston-to-win-first-regional-title/) and a close state final against Cheverus, moved the Broncos up to this.
