Bill Belichick and North Carolina Open Season Against TCU in Dublin

The college football season officially gets underway this weekend when the North Carolina Tar Heels face the TCU Horned Frogs across the Atlantic at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland. Kickoff is set for noon ET on Saturday, Aug. 29.

For North Carolina, the Week 0 matchup carries extra weight. It marks the second season opener in a row against TCU and comes after a rocky first year under head coach Bill Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl champion who left the NFL to take over the program in Chapel Hill. Last season opened with a 48-14 loss to the Horned Frogs, and the Tar Heels finished just 4-8. TCU, by contrast, went 9-4 and capped its year with a 30-27 upset of USC in the Alamo Bowl.

This time around, both programs will be working with new quarterbacks and reshaped rosters. North Carolina brought in Billy Edwards from Wisconsin after he missed most of last season with an injury. Edwards previously started 11 games at Maryland in 2024, completing 65.0% of his passes for 2,881 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. TCU, meanwhile, will start Jaden Craig, a transfer from Harvard where he set the school's all-time passing yardage record. The jump from FCS competition to a Belichick-coached defense will be steep for the first-year Horned Frogs starter.

TCU is also replacing key offensive contributors. Former quarterback Josh Hoover departed for Indiana, where he joined Curt Cignetti's reigning national champion Hoosiers. Hoover threw for the third-most yards in TCU history from 2022 through 2025. The Horned Frogs also lost wide receiver Eric McAlister, who led the team last season with 72 catches, 1,190 receiving yards, and 10 touchdowns.

Recruiting trends and roster continuity favor North Carolina. According to ESPN college football analyst Bill Connelly, the Tar Heels rank 103rd nationally out of 138 schools in returning production, while TCU ranks 69th. Despite that lower returning production, Belichick's first full recruiting cycle produced a notable jump. North Carolina moved from 35th in the 247Sports.com 2025 recruiting rankings to 17th in 2026, with 31 signees participating in spring practice. TCU's 2026 class sits at 44th, with no signees in for spring. On overall team talent, North Carolina ranks 31st to TCU's 40th, per 247Sports.

The international setting adds another layer. Playing in Dublin creates logistical challenges and media obligations that can pull players' focus away from the game itself, and the Tar Heels' edge in experience and coaching could matter in that environment.

TCU head coach Sonny Dykes enters his third season in Fort Worth looking to build on last year's bowl win and prove the Horned Frogs can reload quickly despite the personnel losses. Belichick, meanwhile, is looking to show that last year's collapse was the exception, not the new norm in Chapel Hill.

The Week 0 showdown in Ireland will offer the first glimpse of whether either program has turned the page.
