PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland community has been left to mourn the sudden loss of 22‑year‑old Esrael Bergeron, who died unexpectedly on July 12, 2026. Born in Ethiopia on April 13, 2004, Esrael grew up in Portland with his mother, Louise Bergeron, and his brother, Andre Bergeron. He was 18 when he first began to make his mark on the city, and his family said his short but vibrant life was filled with curiosity, humor, and a fierce drive to understand the world around him.
From an early age, Esrael displayed a quick wit and a penchant for debate. He could argue a point with equal vigor whether he agreed with it or not, and he was fascinated by the ways people think and behave. His friends and acquaintances recall a mind that was both sharp and perceptive, rarely accepting conventional explanations without questioning them. This inclination toward critical thinking often placed him at odds with others, but it also gave him a unique perspective that resonated with many who felt overlooked.
Bergeron’s life was shaped by a deep sense of justice. He was particularly attuned to racial and social inequities, instinctively stepping in to defend those who were bullied, marginalized, or underrepresented. His commitment to fairness was not a rhetorical stance; he actively sought ways to confront unfairness on his own terms. Though he faced significant challenges, he remained independent and determined, insisting on meeting obstacles head‑on rather than retreating.

Both organizations reflect the values Esrael championed throughout his life.
Esrael Bergeron’s passing has left a void in Portland’s social fabric, but the impact of his ideas and actions will continue to echo through the community’s ongoing efforts toward justice and understanding.
