Local Veteran and Skilled Carpenter Lawrence “Pete” Harley Sr. Dies at 86

Lawrence “Pete” C. Harley Sr., a well‑known Maine carpenter and Army veteran whose service took him through the tense days of the Cuban Missile Crisis, died on June 28 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. He was 86.
Harley was born on August 1, 1939, in Topsham and spent his formative years in the coastal community of Cundy’s Harbor. After finishing school, he answered the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Army. Stationed as a tank operator, Harley’s tenure overlapped with the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, a period that placed the nation on high alert.
Following his military service, Harley built a reputation as a skilled carpenter, crafting numerous homes across southern Maine. In addition to his private construction work, he contributed his maintenance expertise to the South Portland School District, ensuring facilities remained safe and functional for students and staff.
Community involvement was a constant thread throughout his life. He held memberships in the Moose Lodge in South Portland and the Eagles club in Westbrook, where he regularly participated in local events and fellowship.
Outside of work, Harley was an avid outdoorsman. He found joy in tending his property, keeping a meticulously maintained yard, riding his Harley‑Davidson motorcycle, and enjoying boating and snowmobiling with family and friends. Those who knew him recall his enthusiasm for hands‑on projects and his love of the open road.
Harley is survived by his wife of many years, Concetta “Etta” (Curatola) Harley. His family also includes his stepsons Donald Hibbard (wife Cathy) and Richard Hibbard (wife Diane); grandchildren Allison (husband Matthew), Brian, Chris, Ashley (husband David); and great‑grandchildren Liam, Anna, and Shamus.

Harley’s dedication to his craft, his community, and his family left a lasting mark on all who crossed his path. His legacy will be remembered through the homes he built, the veterans he served beside, and the countless lives he touched.
