Mary E. Johnson, beloved Biddeford resident and lifelong servant of the restaurant industry, dies at 78

Biddeford, Maine – Mary E. Johnson, a longtime community member known for her generous spirit and quiet strength, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026. She died at home, surrounded by her daughter, son‑in‑law, best friend, brother and his wife.

Johnson’s life was defined by the food she prepared and served. Throughout her working years she held a variety of roles in restaurants, from server to cook to prep cook. “She took pride in caring for others through good food, hard work, and the friendships she built along the way,” said a family member. Her colleagues and guests alike remembered her warm smile, quick wit, and the way she made every guest feel welcome.

A music lover, Johnson’s playlists ranged from the classic sounds of Pink Floyd to the high‑energy beats of Pitbull, reflecting the vibrant personality that endeared her to friends and family. “She was a true joy to be around, always ready to laugh and to share a song,” said a close friend.

Her outlook on life was shaped by a simple lesson she received from her father: “No need of it.” The phrase, she used often, served as a gentle reminder to let go of worry, unnecessary drama, and the burdens that weigh one down.

Johnson’s greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her devoted daughter, four grandchildren, and two great‑grandchildren. She also leaves behind four siblings and countless friends and extended family members who will miss her kindness, laughter, and unwavering love. “Mary was a pillar for our family,” said a sibling. “Her memory will stay in our hearts forever.”

The family plans a private celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Johnson may make a donation to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House through Andwell’s website at https://andwell.org/giving/donate/. Condolences may also be expressed online at http://www.hobbsfuneralhome.com.

Mary Johnson’s passing leaves a profound emptiness in Biddeford, but her legacy of warmth, resilience, and love will endure in the stories, music, and memories she shared with everyone fortunate enough to know her.
