Obituary: Nancy Alice Slocum
Nancy Alice Slocum died of natural causes at her home in Portland, Maine, on Aug. 2 2026, five days before her 82nd birthday. She was born on Aug. 7 1944 in Key West, Florida, to Allan L. and Edythe H. Slocum while her father was stationed there with the Navy. The family spent her early years in Cranford, New Jersey, before moving to Damariscotta, Maine, in 1956. She graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle in 1962 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Maine in Orono.
After college, Slocum lived in New York City for seven years, working as a case manager for the New York City Department of Welfare. She enjoyed the city’s cultural scene, attending Broadway shows, concerts, and spending time at the beach, and traveled to Europe with a friend. She returned to Maine in the early 1970s, taking a position as a unit supervisor with the Department of Human Services in Portland. She remained with the agency for three decades before retiring.
A lifelong animal lover, Slocum regularly supported wildlife and animal welfare organizations and shared her home with a succession of cats. She was an avid reader, often with a book in hand, and a fan of classic rock, listening to artists such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, and Bruce Springsteen on WBLM. She loved the arts and social life in Portland, frequently attending movies, restaurants, concerts, and theater, and spending summer days at the beach. Friends remembered her for her bold independence and lighthearted humor.
She was predeceased by her parents. Slocum is survived by her brother Arthur L. (“Roy”) Slocum and sister‑in‑law Deborah of Eastford, Connecticut; her sister Jane Slocum of Damariscotta; her niece Nicole Moss and her husband Colin, and their children Leah and Holly of North Yarmouth; her nephew Michael Hanna of Damariscotta; her niece Emily Slocum of Portland; her nephew Benjamin Slocum of Eastford, Connecticut; as well as many cousins and close friends.
