Rachel (Bergeron) Owens, 67, Remembered as Devoted Mother and Adventurous Spirit

Rachel (Bergeron) Owens, a Saco native whose life carried her from the factory floors of South Portland to bakeries overseas and back again to the communities she loved, died recently at the age of 67.

Born on April 3, 1959, at Notre Dame Hospital in Biddeford to Lucienne (Brochu) and Roland Bergeron, Rachel graduated from Thornton Academy in Saco in 1977. In the years that followed, she built a varied working life, starting as a forklift driver at the General Electric plant in South Portland before pursuing her passion for baking in England and Germany, and later in Londonderry, New Hampshire, where she eventually settled.

Family was the center of Rachel's world, particularly her son, Wayne, his wife, Sarah (Corriveau), and their three children, Evan, Sophie, and Colin, of Lincoln, Rhode Island. From the time Wayne was born until her final days, Rachel devoted herself to her children and grandchildren, instilling in them a love of art and cooking. Those closest to her say she was "the best mother and grandmother a child could have," and that family always came first in every aspect of her life.

Rachel carried that same devotion into her relationship with her parents and her brother, Raymond Bergeron of Wells, and his two sons, Sean and Brian. She made frequent visits home, where she helped with everything from cooking meals and splitting firewood to mowing lawns, cleaning house, and grocery shopping. When the work was done, the family spent hours riding snowmobiles and ATVs or gathering around the table for long card games.

Her warmth extended well beyond her immediate family. Rachel cultivated close friendships that endured across years and continents, traveling the world with companions she kept throughout her life. She was known for opening her home in Londonderry to friends and family alike, sharing what those who loved her described as joy freely given to anyone who needed it.

In her final years, Rachel received care at Summer Commons in Sanford, Maine. Her family expressed special thanks to the staff there for their attentive care, and also acknowledged two longtime friends, Marilou Lachance of Ocean Park and Claire Dube of Waterboro, for their frequent visits and lifelong devotion.

A memorial service will be held at The Pines, 10 Manor St., Ocean Park, Maine, from 1 to 4 p.m. on July 5, 2026. A graveside service is planned at St. Joseph's Cemetery later in the fall. In lieu of formal tributes, the family has invited those who attend to share a story about Rachel, say a few words, or plant a tree or flowers in her memory.
