Obituary: Sandra E. Castonguay
Sandra E. Castonguay, 83, a devoted mother, grandmother and longtime volunteer whose energy and warmth touched many lives across Maine, died peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at Stroudwater Lodge in Westbrook.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, on November 24, 1942, Sandra was the daughter of Albert and Irene (Cyr) Sirois. She grew up in Van Buren, Maine, where she graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1960, finishing as class president. After high school she pursued studies at Husson College and began her career as a medical secretary in Bangor.
In 1963 she married Roger Castonguay, also a native of Van Buren. The couple settled in Bangor, where they welcomed their son, Mark. The family later moved to Salem, Massachusetts, where daughter Lisa was born, then to Peabody, Massachusetts, before returning to Maine to live in Lewiston and eventually Scarborough, where they made their home for many years.
Sandra’s commitment to her community was evident in more than two decades of service with the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. She held several leadership roles, including serving as president, and contributed to the Hospitality Committee, the Snowball Committee and the auxiliary’s gift shop. In 2007 she was honored with the Scanlon Award, recognizing more than 1,700 hours of volunteer work and exemplifying the spirit of generosity and enthusiasm that defined her service.
Beyond her volunteer work, Sandra enjoyed a variety of hobbies. She played tennis, skied, sailed and participated in a bowling league at the Big 20 Bowling Center. She also spent time working at The Dancing Elephant clothing store in Portland and loved beach outings, music, dancing, entertaining and travel, always ready for a new adventure.
Family members remember her as a loving “Mimi” to her three grandchildren, a supportive sister and a steadfast friend to many.
Roger Castonguay, her husband of 35 years, predeceased her in 1991 while they were living in Scarborough.
Sandra is survived by her son, Mark Castonguay of Brunswick, and his wife, Stephenie; her daughter, Lisa Casper of Windham, and her husband, James; a brother, Gary Sirois of Weeki Wachee, Florida, and his wife, Debbie; a sister, Barbara Levine of Yarmouthport, Massachusetts, and her husband, Steve; and three grandchildren, Todd Casper of Auburn, Sara Casper of Essex Junction, Vermont, and Jordon Castonguay of Burlington, Massachusetts.
Visiting hours will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home, 365 Main Street, Saco. A funeral mass will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Margaret’s Church, 6 Saco Avenue, Old Orchard Beach. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
