Obituary: Thomas “Tom” Norton

Thomas "Tom" Norton, a retired naval engineer who spent decades shaping the vessels that guard America's coastlines, died unexpectedly last month at his home in Wells. He was 71.

Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Norton made Maine his home for many years. He leaves behind his wife, Cathy, to whom he was married for 25 years, as well as his two children, Amy and Chris Thompson, daughter-in-law Tara, and grandchildren Elizabeth and Alex.

Norton's career in naval engineering spanned decades. He held professional engineering licenses in both marine engineering and hydrodynamics, and maintained memberships in the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Colleagues remembered him as a meticulous engineer with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

"Tom had a remarkable mind," recalled a former associate. "He never stopped learning."

Beyond his technical expertise, Norton cultivated an unusually broad set of interests. Friends and family described him as a man equally at home discussing ship hydrodynamics as he was perfecting a recipe in the kitchen, tending his garden, or losing himself in a good book. He was an avid hockey fan and traveler who approached every interest with characteristic curiosity.

After retiring in January, Norton made a dramatic career pivot. He began training to become a hospice care worker, a choice that reflected what those who knew him described as his deep capacity for compassion.

"That's who Tom was at his core," said a family friend. "He always wanted to help others."

In keeping with that commitment, the family has requested that memorial donations be directed to Hospice of Southern Maine – Andwell Health Partners in Lewiston.

Norton also is survived by his siblings John, Nancy, Debbie, and Amy, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on August 13 at Bibber Memorial Chapel, located at 111 Chapel Road in Wells. A celebration of his life will follow at 11 a.m. the next day at St. Mary's Church on Eldridge Road in Wells.
