Walter Joseph Stilphen Jr., longtime Maine-born labor advocate and martial arts mentor, dies at 72
Walter Joseph Stilphen Jr., whose life stretched from a football field in Orono to the bargaining tables of organized labor and the dojo mats of martial arts, died Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Hope House Hospice in Massachusetts. He was 72.
Stilphen was born in Portland, Maine, to Walter J. Stilphen Sr. and Shirley A. Stilphen. He grew up in South Portland, graduated from South Portland High School, and went on to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine, where he played football and joined Phi Kappa Sigma.
His first career began at 18, when he pinned on a badge and entered law enforcement. He served his community in that role for several years before, in 1979, taking a position as Secretary Treasurer and Chief Principal Officer of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 48. In that role, he became a vocal advocate for fair labor standards, collective bargaining, and workplace safety.
Those commitments followed him into the private sector. Starting in 1988, Stilphen spent a decade at Hannaford, beginning in Human Resources before moving into operations, where he rose to Director of Distribution. He later served as Vice President of Distribution for American Sales and finished his working life as General Manager of Coastal Pacific Food Distributors, retiring after 16 years with the company.
Outside of work, Stilphen pursued a parallel discipline. He trained to a black belt in Ninpo Jiu Jitsu and became a coach and mentor to others. Former students described him as humble, powerful, and insightful. An avid reader, he believed firmly that knowledge was power, a conviction that shaped both his career and his personal life.
Family, friends, and former colleagues say he lived to work, but his deepest devotion was reserved for home. He married Carolynne, whom he called his best friend, and the couple settled in Massachusetts. Christmas was his favorite time of year, marked each season by a viewing of "Scrooge" and his tradition of singing, "I like life. Life likes me."
In retirement, Stilphen traded the boardroom for board games, becoming a devoted Uno player and a relentless, affectionate heckler to his wife, children, and grandchildren alike.
He is survived by his wife, Carolynne Stilphen of Massachusetts; three daughters, Theresa Rock and her husband Arthur Rock of Massachusetts, Carly Stilphen of Rhode Island, and Christy Stilphen of Maine; two grandchildren, Harper Rock and Spencer Rock of Massachusetts; one sister, Lisa Ellington of Maine; and four brothers, Steven, Dean, and Kevin Stilphen of Maine, and Greg Stilphen of Florida.
Stilphen will be laid to rest at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland, on October 16 at 11 a.m. A celebration of life will follow at 12:30 p.m. at DiMillo's, 25 Long Wharf, Portland. All are invited to attend.
