Fauci Defends Before Senate as Old COVID Wounds Reopen Online

Dr. Anthony Fauci appeared before a U.S. Senate committee this week and invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times, refusing to answer even basic questions about the day of the week or the color of his tie. The hearing, held before the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, has reignited a fierce national debate over pandemic-era lockdowns and the officials who championed them.

The appearance comes amid renewed scrutiny of Fauci's role in shaping COVID-19 policy, fueled by the recent release of his personal diary. The entries appear to show Fauci privately taking credit for lockdowns and other restrictive measures that he publicly distanced himself from at the time. That revelation has hardened opposition among conservatives who long argued that the policies were heavy-handed and inconsistent.

On social media, the hearing served as a flashpoint. Critics shared stories of policies they say caused disproportionate harm — and in some cases, absurdity.

Trauma surgeon Dr. Mollie James pointed to professional golfer Jon Rahm, who in 2021 was forced to withdraw from the PGA Tour's Memorial Tournament while holding a six-shot lead after testing positive for COVID-19 on the course. Rahm was in line for a winner's purse of more than $1.6 million.

"Reminder how insane the world was in 2021," James posted on X.

Others resurfaced viral moments from the lockdown era: a Malibu paddleboarder arrested alone on the water for allegedly violating local restrictions; a backhoe dumping sand into a Venice Beach skate park to deter gatherings; and an Ohio mother, Alecia Ketts, who was tased and detained by a school resource officer at an outdoor high school football game after refusing to wear a mask while watching her children.

The Ketts incident drew a direct response from Sen. Bernie Moreno during Wednesday's hearing. The Ohio Republican, who has said his own Senate run was motivated in part by his opposition to COVID-era restrictions, raised the case as he pressed Fauci.

Fauci's decision to plead the Fifth on every question, including innocuous ones posed by senators testing whether he would respond at all, marked a notable moment in a career spent largely in public-facing roles. During the pandemic, he served as President Trump's chief medical advisor on the White House Coronavirus Task Force and later as President Biden's chief medical advisor. He also spent decades directing the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The political reaction was swift and polarized. Some critics, including Rep. Lance Gooden, D-Texas, used the hearing to attack not just Fauci but the broader Democratic political establishment. "Dr. Fauci isn't the only guilty one," Gooden wrote on X, arguing that Democrats pursued "draconian COVID-19 lockdowns." He shared footage of the sand-filled skate park as evidence.

Conservative commentator Chaya Raichik, who runs the widely followed LibsOfTikTok account, compiled a list of public officials — including Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser — who were accused of violating their own public health guidelines. Whitmer was photographed at a bar; Newsom attended a dinner party at the high-end French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley; and Bowser officiated a maskless indoor wedding shortly after issuing a new indoor mask order.

"It's insane that any of these people were ever taken seriously again after this," Raichik wrote.

The debate also reached into the world of youth sports. Podcast host Alex Lace highlighted a 2021 incident in which high school track athletes in New Hampshire were required to wear masks while competing outdoors.

"I s- you not," Lace posted. "During COVID they forced high school track teams to run outdoors… in masks. Never forget what they did."

A contempt vote against Fauci reportedly loomed over portions of the hearing. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., also pressed Fauci on whether his Fifth Amendment invocations were even valid given the circumstances.

The online reaction, sprawling and at times profane, underscored how raw the feelings about the pandemic remain — even years after most restrictions have long since ended. For Fauci's supporters, the hearing represented an exercise in political score-settling that risked distracting from questions of public health preparedness. For his detractors, it was long-overdue accountability from a figure they believe shaped policy in ways that harmed millions of Americans.

What is clear is that the COVID-19 era, far from fading into the past, continues to drive a wedge through American political life — and Fauci remains, for many, the face of that unresolved anger.
