Police still looking for potentially armed suspects in Springvale
Law enforcement agencies continued a multi-agency search across a broad area of Springvale on Wednesday, working to locate at least two suspects believed to have fired on a Sanford police officer during a traffic stop more than 24 hours earlier.
The incident began shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, when a Sanford officer pulled over a vehicle near the intersection of Lebanon and Shaw streets for what police described as a routine traffic stop. According to authorities, someone inside the vehicle opened fire on the officer before the driver sped away. The officer was not injured.
The vehicle was later discovered abandoned on a trail off Blanchard Road, and officers were working to obtain a search warrant for it, according to Sanford police Maj. Mark Dyer.
By Wednesday afternoon, Dyer said there were no significant new developments to share. Police have not released descriptions of the suspects, other than confirming they are seeking "two or more" individuals.
The search has drawn a substantial law enforcement response. Officers from the Sanford, Berwick, Kennebunk, and Old Orchard Beach police departments have been joined by the York County Sheriff's Office and a helicopter crew from the Maine Forest Service. Crews have been canvassing the area since Tuesday morning, including going door-to-door at homes in the search zone.
The area being covered includes Blanchard Road, Hanson Ridge Road, Lebanon Street, Oak Street, Smith Road, and Sunset Road. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and to report anything suspicious to 911, while advising people to avoid the area if possible.
In a public message Tuesday afternoon, the department acknowledged the unease the ongoing situation has created in the community.
"We understand that the continued uncertainty surrounding this incident is concerning," police wrote. "Please remain aware of your surroundings. If you see anyone or anything suspicious, do not approach or engage them — move to a safe location and call 911 immediately."
The Sanford Police Department has said it will share updates through its social media channels as the investigation progresses.
