A Portland man died Tuesday after being hit by a vehicle at the intersection of Marginal Way and Preble Street, police say.
Officers responded to the intersection at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for reports of a vehicle and pedestrian collision, the Portland Police Department said in a news release.
The man, 49, was hit by a vehicle operated by an 82-year-old man, also of Portland, the department said.
The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and died shortly after arriving at Maine Medical Center, according to the department. Police did not provide his identity Tuesday afternoon as they were working to notify next of kin.
The area was closed to traffic for about four hours as officials investigated the scene, the department said.
The investigation is continuing and no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon, the department said.

Of the five people killed in motor vehicle crashes on Portland streets last year, four were pedestrians. The number of pedestrian deaths and serious injuries doubled in Maine from 2024 to 2025.
Cyclist and pedestrian safety has become a [subject of debate](https://www.pressherald.com/2026/05/06/how-a-dangerous-portland-intersection-is-driving-talks-on-pedestrian-safety/), and the city and state have [recently ramped up efforts](https://www.pressherald.com/2026/06/11/state-pedestrian-safety-campaign-adds-to-parallel-efforts-in-portland/) to increase safety.
The Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office also [announced last month](https://www.pressherald.com/2026/05/27/cumberland-county-prosecutors-to-review-all-future-pedestrian-crashes/) that prosecutors will start considering charges in every car crash that injures a pedestrian or cyclist.
Under the new policy, all law enforcement agencies in the county will be expected to preserve and turn over evidence collected from motor vehicle accidents that result in injuries to people who are walking or biking.
