Maine Mill Showcases Rare 1776 Printing of the Declaration Until Saturday

Portland, Maine – The Maine Mill, the state’s museum dedicated to industrial heritage and learning, is offering a special viewing of a rare copy of the Declaration of Independence printed on the very day it was adopted, July 4, 1776. The exhibit will remain on display until Saturday, giving visitors a unique chance to see one of the few surviving documents printed on the day the nation declared its independence.

The artifact, a parchment manuscript bearing the original inked text, is among a small handful of copies that were reproduced shortly after the Declaration’s publication. Its presence in the Maine Mill’s collection underscores the museum’s commitment to preserving and interpreting significant pieces of American history.

Curators say the display will allow guests to examine the fine details of the parchment, the printing technique, and the original ink. Visitors can view the document in a controlled environment, with informational panels that explain the historical context and the significance of the text’s rapid dissemination in the 18th century.

The Maine Mill’s exhibit runs during its regular visiting hours, which are typically from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The display will be removed on the following Sunday, so those interested in witnessing this rare piece of history are encouraged to plan a visit before the end of the week.

While the Maine Mill is best known for showcasing the state’s industrial past, the addition of a 1776 Declaration copy highlights the broader narrative of Maine’s role in the early United States. The museum’s ongoing efforts to bring historical artifacts to the public continue to enrich the cultural landscape of the region.
