Records fall at Maine state youth track meet
Nearly 1,000 young athletes from 35 teams converged on Cony High School in Augusta on Aug. 8 for the Val Foss USATF Maine State Track and Field Championship, and by the end of the day 11 Maine state youth records had been rewritten.
The meet, organized for competitors ages 5 through 14, served as a showcase for some of the strongest young talent in the state. Scarborough Track Club capped its dominant showing by repeating as overall team champion and adding the girls' title to its haul. Panther Track Club of Poland finished a close second overall and claimed the boys' championship.
Eight individual records fell during the competition. In the boys' 9-10 division, Connor Caizzo of Cumberland/North Yarmouth blazed through the 1,500 meters in 5 minutes, 11.2 seconds. Nellie Burgess of Healthy Hornets Track Club soared over the high jump bar at 4 feet, 5½ inches to set a new girls' 9-10 standard.
The boys' 11-12 division produced a cluster of standout performances. Isaac Pawlak of Cumberland/North Yarmouth launched the discus 113 feet, 10¾ inches, while Derek Dixon of Skowhegan Parks & Recreation won the 400 meters in 1:01.61. Aiden Dolley of Panther Track set the pace in the 800-meter racewalk at 3:54.48, and Jesse Patkus of Lakers Track Club sped through the 80-meter hurdles in 13.31 seconds.
The girls' 11-12 division also delivered record-setting efforts. Sophia Hartigan of Freeport Family Track & Field won the 200 meters in 27.38 seconds, and Elsie Fitzpatrick of Bangor Ram Track Club reached 32 feet, 5¾ inches in the triple jump.
Three relay squads joined the record books as well. The Cumberland/North Yarmouth boys' 9-10 4x100 team crossed the line in 1:01.46, the Scarborough Track Club girls' 9-10 4x400 team finished in 5:15.36, and the Auburn Parks & Recreation Track boys' 13-14 4x100 team clocked 48.91.
The Scarborough 4x400 relay squad, made up of Avery Rodrigues, Violet Fourre, Rosa Smaldone, and Rose Wallace, was among the teams celebrated for their record-setting day, a fitting capstone to a championship meet that left no shortage of marks for the next generation of Maine track and field athletes to chase.
