Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect homers in Sea Dogs’ win
PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland Sea Dogs secured a 6-4 victory over the Reading Fightin Phils Wednesday night at Hadlock Field, powered by a balanced offensive attack that included three home runs.
Justin Gonzalez, Boston's No. 2 prospect, made an immediate impact in his return to Double-A action. The 22-year-old launched his first home run at the level to lead off the bottom of the first inning, sending a shot to right-center field that got the home crowd at Hadlock Field on their feet.
"It's exciting to see a player of Justin's caliber come in and make an immediate impact," Sea Dogs manager said. "That leadoff homer set the tone for us."
The Sea Dogs (30-24) built their early lead with long balls. Henry Godbout connected on a two-run homer in the first inning, extending Portland's advantage to 3-0. Tyler McDonough then added a three-run shot in the fifth inning, providing enough cushion for the Sea Dogs' bullpen to close out the victory.
Reading (26-28) mounted a comeback attempt behind Pedro Leon's RBI triple and Wuilfredo Antunez's solo home run, but the Fightin Phils couldn't complete the rally.
Gonzalez had appeared in just two games since his Double-A debut Monday night, where he went 2-for-5 at the plate. His performance Wednesday suggests the young infielder is quickly adjusting to the level.
Roman Anthony, Boston's top prospect, was in the lineup for Tuesday's game on a rehabilitation assignment but did not play Wednesday. The Red Sox outfielder has been working his way back from injury with the Sea Dogs.
The Sea Dogs will look to carry the momentum into their upcoming series as they continue their push in the Eastern League playoff race.
