Retired police sergeant shoots deputy chief wife and their daughter in wealthy, coastal enclave home

Three Dead in Marin County Home in Suspected Murder‑Suicide
A 68‑year‑old retired San Francisco police sergeant is believed to have killed his 65‑year‑old former deputy chief, her 24‑year‑old daughter, and then taken his own life in their Mill Valley home on Sunday. The incident, which authorities say was a “suspected double‑murder suicide,” was discovered by Marin County deputies after a 911 call.
The sheriff’s office said the call was made at about 5 p.m., and deputies entered the house after a resident—identified only as another occupant—had left safely. They found Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and Kevin Mannix, all dead inside. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.
“Preliminary investigation indicates a suspected double‑murder suicide involving three individuals,” Marin County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Miguel Almaguer told reporters. “The suspected shooter is male.” Almaguer later confirmed that Kevin Mannix was the shooter, but he declined to discuss evidence found at the scene.
The trio had long been part of San Francisco’s law‑enforcement community. Ann Mannix had served as deputy police chief and was the first woman to join, then lead, the city’s SWAT team. She was also on the board of the Police Activities League and championed youth sports for local children.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a valued member of the SFPD family,” said Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association. “The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder‑suicide has left our entire SFPD community reeling.”
Former officer and Bay Area columnist Lou Barberini, who had worked with the Mannix family, added that Ann was “very competent,” a “great athlete, a good cop, and well‑liked.” He described her as a “talent” who “had a lot of talent” and was a “good athlete, a good cop.”
The San Francisco Police Department has yet to release an official statement. The incident remains under investigation, and authorities are not commenting on the motives behind the shooting.
