Bangor Jury Finds Thorpe Guilty of Murder in 2024 Strangulation Death

BANGOR — A Penobscot County jury returned a guilty verdict Thursday against a defendant known only as Thorpe, convicting them of murder in the strangulation death of another person.

The weeklong trial concluded with the jury deliberating for several hours before reaching its decision. The conviction stems from events that occurred in 2024, though specific details about the victim and the circumstances leading to the death were not immediately available from court proceedings.

Prosecutors presented evidence over five days before the seven-man, five-woman jury. The defense challenged the prosecution's case but was unable to overcome the evidence presented, according to court observers.

Sentencing has not yet been scheduled. Thorpe will remain in custody pending that hearing, at which time prosecutors are expected to recommend a specific prison term.

The case marks one of the more serious homicide convictions in the region this year. Strangulation cases often carry significant weight in sentencing because they are viewed by courts as particularly brutal and demonstrating a willingness to use extreme violence.

Court officials said a full transcript of the trial proceedings will become available in the coming weeks. The victim's name has not been released pending notification of family members.

Thorpe's attorney indicated the defense is reviewing its options for appeal but did not elaborate on potential grounds for challenging the verdict.
