Rumble Ponies score 2 in 8th to beat Sea Dogs

Binghamton’s Marco Vargas delivered a clutch performance to lift the Rumble Ponies to an 8‑6 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field on Sunday. Vargas’s two‑run single in the top of the eighth inning sealed the win after the Sea Dogs had tied the game with a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh.

The game opened with a solo home run by Vargas in the first inning, giving Binghamton a 1‑0 lead. A sacrifice fly by Corey Collins extended the advantage to 2‑0 in the second inning. Portland answered with an RBI single by Will Turner and an RBI groundout from Nate Baez, tying the score at 2‑all.

Binghamton regained a one‑run edge when Jacob Reimer delivered an RBI single in the third inning, making it 3‑2. Portland then stole the lead with a two‑run single by Henry Godbout later in that frame. The Rumble Ponies reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning on a sac fly by D’Andre Smith, an RBI double by Mitch Voit, and another RBI single by Vargas.

A run scored on a double‑play grounder by Brooks Brannon brought Portland within a point of the Rumble Ponies, but the game remained close until Vargas’s decisive hit. His two‑run single in the eighth inning broke a 6‑6 tie and gave Binghamton the final margin of victory.

Vargas finished the game 4 for 5 at the plate, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Chris Suero also had a standout offensive day, going three‑for‑four with three runs scored.

The Sea Dogs’ Jack Winnay hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game, but the Rumble Ponies’ offensive resilience and clutch hitting in the late innings proved too much for the Portland club. The win moves Binghamton ahead in the Eastern League standings as the season progresses.
