Russia Fires Ballistic and Cruise Missiles at Kyiv Hours After U.S. Envoys Arrive

Kyiv, Ukraine – A ballistic missile strike by Russia on Tuesday morning set off a series of fires and damaged residential buildings in two districts of the Ukrainian capital, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack followed a three‑day ceasefire that ended that same day, after U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner visited Kyiv as part of a renewed effort to resume stalled peace negotiations.

The missiles struck residential areas in two parts of Kyiv, sparking fires that spread to an educational facility. Residents were urged to stay indoors, and Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that people had become trapped inside a building after the attacks. Ukrainian officials said the strike involved both ballistic and cruise missiles.

The attack came on the same day that a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine—agreed to a few days earlier—came to an end. The ceasefire had been negotiated during the U.S. envoys’ visit to Kyiv, which took place after Witkoff and Kushner had met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the day before. “Substantive progress was made, including movement on scheduling additional trilateral talks,” Witkoff wrote on X following the trip. “President Trump is working hard to stop the killing and work towards a lasting and durable peace,” he added.

In a separate incident, the governor of the Russian city of Saratov reported that a Ukrainian drone had struck civilian infrastructure, injuring several people. Ukrainian drone attacks also targeted three Russian oil refineries on Monday.

Ukrainian officials said Russian attacks over the past day had killed multiple people and wounded dozens more across the country. The war, which began in February 2022, continues to see intermittent attempts at diplomacy coupled with ongoing hostilities.
