Four Drivers Face Grid Penalties Ahead of IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington

Drivers and crews arriving at the National Mall on Sunday morning learned they'd be starting further back than expected, as four teams were hit with grid penalties just hours before the green flag dropped on the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.

Nolan Siegel, Marcus Ericsson, Mick Schumacher, and Santino Ferrucci will each lose six starting positions after their teams were penalized for making unapproved engine changes. The affected entries include Siegel's No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet, Ericsson's No. 28 Andretti Global Honda, Schumacher's No. 47 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda, and Ferrucci's No. 14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet.

The penalties stem from teams exceeding their allotted engine inventory for the season. With the championship winding down, several organizations have opted to install fresh powerplants despite knowing it would cost them grid spots.

This marks a particularly cruel twist for Ericsson, who expressed confidence Saturday that passing would be manageable on the temporary street course. Now the Swedish driver will have that belief tested immediately, forced to carve his way through the field from well outside the top 10.

The timing could hardly be worse. The Freedom 250 features 250 miles of racing around downtown Washington, where concrete barriers line narrow corridors and overtaking opportunities are expected to be limited. Starting deep in the pack means these four drivers face an uphill battle from the moment the engines fire.

Despite the early penalties, the half-hour warm-up session earlier Sunday passed without major incident. A handful of cars briefly visited run-off areas, but no significant contact occurred, sparing crews additional repair work before the main event.

The race is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Eastern Time, with pre-race coverage airing on FOX beginning at 11:30 a.m. ET.
