South Portland baseball edges Cheverus for key A South win

PORTLAND — Nate Masters outdueled Cheverus ace Ben Dumais on Tuesday afternoon, guiding his team to a victory in a tight pitching showcase at The Ballpark at Old Orchard Beach.

Masters, backed by sharp defense behind him, navigated the Stags’ lineup through seven innings to claim the win in a game that remained scoreless deep into the later frames. Dumais matched him pitch for pitch, turning in a hard-luck performance for Cheverus that saw him surrender few hits and no earned runs before the offense finally broke through against him.

The decisive rally came in the sixth inning, when a two-out error extended the inning and allowed the go-ahead run to cross the plate. Masters stranded runners in scoring position in each of the final two innings to preserve the one-run margin.

The victory improves the winners' tournament positioning heading into the final week of the regular season, while Cheverus drops a heartbreaker despite another elite outing from their senior left-hander.
