A Standish man is accused of sexually assaulting a child and possessing child sexual abuse material.

Jeremy Carter, 34, was arrested by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday morning. He is being held at the jail on a $50,000 cash bail.

Detectives began investigating Carter in early July, according to the sheriff’s office. He is accused of sexually assaulting a child under 14.

Carter faces charges of gross sexual assault, unlawful sexual contact and unlawful sexual touching, as well as sexual exploitation of a minor and possessing child sexual abuse material, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Gross sexual assault, a felony-level Class A crime, carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and a $50,000 fine.

Carter had not obtained an attorney as of Thursday afternoon, according to a clerk at the Cumberland County Courthouse.
