Maine State Police Investigating Man's Death Found Near Sanford Backyard Firepit

Maine State Police are investigating after a man was found dead near a firepit in a Sanford backyard early Thursday morning.

Sanford police were called to a home on Twombley Road shortly after 5 a.m., according to state police spokesperson Shannon Moss, who shared the information in a news release Tuesday. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the man's body near a firepit in the yard.

The case has drawn a multi-agency response. Maine State Police's Major Crimes Unit, the Office of State Fire Marshal, and Sanford police all worked at the scene throughout the day Thursday, processing the area and gathering evidence. The man's body was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed.

As of Tuesday, the man had not been publicly identified, and his cause and manner of death remain pending. Moss said the investigation is ongoing, though she emphasized that there is no danger to the public.

The residence is located in Sanford, a city in York County in southern Maine, near the border with New Hampshire. Further details are expected as the investigation develops.
