(Courtesy of Cobblestone Coffee & Co.) The owner of Taj Indian Cuisine is opening a new Indian-inspired brunch cafe Sunday in South Portland. Cobblestone Coffee & Co. is launching at 200 Gorham Road, where Taj was originally located before [moving to its larger space](https://www.pressherald.com/2024/02/09/indian-restaurant-taj-moving-to-larger-south-portland-location/) in 2024. Owner Sai Guntaka said Cobblestone’s housemade pastry offerings include mango lassi croissants, gulab jamun croissants, gajar ka halwa muffins, chai palmiers and a banana bread made from Chef Adam Williams’s mom’s recipe. Williams previously cooked at Black Point Inn in Scarborough, Evo Kitchen + Bar and Dry Dock. Cobblestone’s bakers are Lucie Beau, formerly head baker at Belleville, and Angela Young, who also baked at Belleville. The menu also includes dishes like eggs vindaloo with side of paratha flatbread; chai-spiced French toast with date syrup; Indian masala omelet with sourdough; avocado toast with chaat masala and mint sauce; a selection of sweet, filled dosa crepes; vada pav, a Mumbai street sandwich; and egg, cheese and meat breakfast sandwiches. Cobblestone collaborated with Tandem for their coffee, single-origin Indian beans roasted exclusively for the new venue. Beverages include orange cardamom latte, ube latte, masala chai, matcha, and orange juice fresh squeezed tableside. Guntaka said coffee and specialty coffee beverages are priced for value — $4-$4.50 for in-house orders, slightly more for larger volume to-go drinks. The restaurant serves as many as 200 hot meals a day to locals in need, using a warming cabinet set up [outside its front entryway](https://www.pressherald.com/2026/01/26/south-portlands-taj-restaurant-makes-free-hot-meals-a-permanent-feature/).  Guntaka said profits will also be used to set up a new outreach program later this summer feeding food-insecure people in Bangor. They’ll use Bangor’s Rasa restaurant — run by a former sous chef at Taj and co-owned by Guntaka — as home base for the operation. “I don’t take any donations,” Guntaka said. “So Cobblestone will help me create new jobs, plus do these (outreach) programs.” Cobblestone Coffee & Co. will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Copy the Story Link Tagged: [maine restaurant](https://www.pressherald.com/tag/maine-restaurant/), [the wrap](https://www.pressherald.com/tag/the-wrap/) [![](https://www.pressherald.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2022/02/20230831_tim-cebula_028-e1722525587293.jpg?w=80)](https://www.pressherald.com/author/timothy-cebula) [Tim CebulaStaff Writer](https://www.pressherald.com/author/timothy-cebula) Tim Cebula has been a food writer and editor for 23 years.
